Hardwood Refinishing Orlando

Do It Yourself: Hardwood Floors

Mark off the time if you’re going to go this alone. It will take a few days to get it all done and Home Depot qualifies it as intermediate level difficulty.

We talked a lot about technique, but here are some more tips for you:

Tips:

  • Make sure you clear furniture from the room and pull up all rugs and carpeting.
  • Hammer down any nails that are protruding. Find them by sliding the blade of a putty knife across the floor.
  • Check for loose floorboards and squeaks and creeks. You can secure it will finishing nails.
  • Remove debris on the floor with a cleaner or mop.
  • Important: Seal air vent covers to prevent dust from getting in the ductwork.
  • If you’re going room by room, use plastic sheeting to seal doors to keep dust from the rest of the house.

Important Cleaning Steps:

1. Sweep or vacuum the floor with a hard floor attachment to remove loose dirt.

2. Use a wood-safe cleaner with water

3. Mop your floor with the mixture. Try not have excessive water - do not let liquid pool, which can warp and streak wood.

4. Gently scrub stains and shoe marks with a quality cleaner. If there's a stain that's hard to get out, use a toothbrush or sponge. Do not use steel wool or scouring pads to avoid scratches.

5. Rinse the water and enjoy the shine.

Noteworthy: If you're depending on a housecleaning service, be very clear with them about how you expect your floors to be cleaned. Don't leave it up to chance. If you walk them through the correct steps, you know that you've protected your investment.
